Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ schematics reveal the rear camera design

Samsung has sent out media invites for the Galaxy Unpacked event at MWC in Barcelona on February 25 where it will launch the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship smartphones. Samsung is teasing major camera improvements with the tagline “Camera. Reimagined.”

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have been subject to multiple leaks in the last few months leaving little to imagination. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to be iterative updates with design similar to that of its predecessor. The South Korean company is expected to add minor tweaks with reduced chin on both the devices and the fingerprint sensor is now likely to be placed below the camera module.

The Galaxy S9 was shown in a brief testing video ahead of its launch and now we have more pictures depicting the schematic diagram of the device. The schematics posted by Slashleaks contributor Zyad Atef shows the rear camera setup of the two devices. The rear schematic of the Galaxy S9 shows a single camera module and a fingerprint sensor placed below the lens. The LED flash and the heart rate sensor is placed on the right side of the camera module.

The Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, seems to be getting the dual rear camera setup found on Galaxy Note 8. The schematics of Galaxy S9+ shows an overall design similar to that Galaxy S9 but will house dual vertically-stacked rear cameras and fingerprint sensor underneath the lens.

The front of both the phones look similar with front camera, sensors and earpiece located on top of the display. According to reports, Samsung is expected to offer an improved iris scanner with Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones. The Galaxy S9 duo is expected to use an improved 3-megapixel sensor as opposed to 2-megapixel sensor found on existing Galaxy flagships and will support mobile banking authentication.

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to sport a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED displays. Both the phones will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform in the US while rest of the markets will get Exynos 9 Series chipset.

As evident from the invite, the focus is on cameras where Apple and Google have taken a lead over Samsung lately. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are tipped to feature variable aperture cameras allowing for wider f/1.5 aperture in low-light scenario and narrower f/2.4 aperture in bright daylight conditions. It is not clear whether Samsung will allow Galaxy S9 users to control the f stop setting manually for a better overall pictures.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to be IP68 water and dust resistant and run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. The smartphones are expected to pack a larger battery this time along with support for wireless charging. Evan Blass had recently tweeted that Galaxy S9 and S9+ preorders will begin on March 1 and the devices will go on sale starting March 16.
